Shocking Revelation! NITI Aayog relies on contractual staff; major information revealed via RTI

New Delhi: NITI Aayog, the apex think tank responsible for formulating policies and plans for the nation’s development, is running largely on the strength of contractual employees. This shocking revelation has come to light through information sought under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

The Central Public Information Officer (CPIO) of NITI Aayog provided this written information in response to an RTI application filed by Nagpur-based RTI activist Mr. Sanjay Thul.

What was revealed in the RTI response? According to the data obtained, a large number of consultants and Young Professionals (YPs) are working at NITI Aayog, all of whom are working purely on a contractual basis.

  • Total Contractual Staff: As per the data available up to June 3, 2026, there are 142 consultants and 156 Young Professionals working at NITI Aayog.

  • Not Regular Employees: NITI Aayog clarified in its response that these consultants and Young Professionals are not classified as ‘regular staff’. They have been appointed solely on a contractual basis.

  • Sanctioned Strength: According to NITI Aayog’s consultancy guidelines dated July 7, 2023, the total sanctioned strength of such contractual consultants and Young Professionals in the commission is 450.
